MUSSELp Credits: Who is Behind All This?
The MUSSELp is:
A large portion of our funding comes from the National Science Foundation. Our current grants are entitled "Systematic Revision of the Etherioidea, the Freshwater Mussels (Mollusca: Unionoida) of the Gondwanan Continents" (DEB-0316125 and DEB-0316488) and "Evolution in a Vortex: An Inventory of the Fishes and Mollusks of the Lower Congo River Rapids" (DEB-0542575). DLG also serves as a Senior Investigator on Gonzalo Giribet's collaborative research grant with Rüdiger Bieler and Paula Mikkelsen, "AToL: Phylogeny on the half-shell Assembling the Bivalve Tree of Life" (DEB-0732903).
Our 2005 expedition to Zambia was funded in part by the Geographical Society of Philadelphia.
This site is hosted by the ANSP, and support for systematic research on the Unionoida is provided by the Laboratory for Molecular Systematics & Ecology @ ANSP.
Satellite Participants
The scope of the MUSSELp is enormous and we couldn't done as much as we have already without the assistance of the people who have been so generous with their assistance.

To develop our database, undertake our research and create this web site we use:
- Mac OS X. All development is done in Macintosh computers.
- FileMaker Pro. All local database development is done in FileMaker, an easy and intuitive application copious complicated data.
- Microsoft Office. Valuable productivity software: Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Firefox. This is our preferred web browser.
- Adobe Creative Suite 2. Industry standand applications for working with graphics, pdfs and web development: Photoshop, Illustrator, GoLive and Acrobat.
- Corel Graphics. More tools for working with images, etc.
- PHP (PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor). Used to create dynamic web pages for the online version of the MUSSELp Database.
- MySQL (Structured Query Language). Database format for the online version of the MUSSELpdb.
- iMap. Powerful but simple mapping application for the Mac OS.
- PAUP*. While suffering from a number of deep flaws, this is still our preferred program for analyzing phylogenetic data.
- MacClade. A power tool for formatting data for phylogenetic analyses.
- TreeRot. Used to calculate Bremer and Partitioned Bremer support values in conjunction with PAUP*.
- Sequence Monkey. Another powerful tool for formatting data for phylogenetic analyses, especially DNA sequences.
All opinions expressed on the MUSSEL Project Web Site are those of the PIs and are not necessarily those of our collaborators, home institutions or funding agencies.
